FYI for parents: The new policy for Center closings is that if the SF Schools are closed, Open Arms will be closed. This was decided last night at the board meeting and a new copy of the Parent Handbook will be issued soon. We are posting this now to inform parents before a potential storm tonight or tomorrow. Week of the Young Child: Wednesday Update!

We are having such a great week so far! On Monday we learned more about the important of playing to learn! We also had a fun time painting our faces! On Tuesday, we dressed up in our favorite sports team outfits. We also had a visit from Office Bob from the SF Police Department who brought Buddy the Safety Bug with him. The kids loved this talking car who told them about stranger danger. Today our classrooms are talking about familes, because that is the topic of the day. The Jr. Kindergarten room is having a party for their families! Today we all look pretty cool because it is crazy hair and sunglasses day. Parents: don’t forget to check out our shutterfly page to see what we’re doing throughout the day! Tomorrow is my personal favorite day: pajama day!

Week of the Young Child

Open Arms will be celebrating Week of the Young Child this year. The theme of this year’s WOYC is Early Years are Learning Years. Here at Open Arms, we understand and reinforce the imprtance of play as a learning opportunity for all ages of children. On each day of this week we will have a different topic that we will base activities and visitors around. They are:

Monday–Play: Where Learning Matters

Tuesday–Encouraging Health and Fitness

Wednesday–Strengthening Families

Thursday–Investing in Young Children Benefits All

Friday–Teaching and Teachers Matter

We are looking for lots of volunteers to come in and any talents, hobbies, or professions that relate to these topics. There is a sign up for parents in the entryway. This week we will also be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair, which will be open Wed-Fri from 4-6 and Fri from 7-9am. We are looking for volunteers to help work this event as well. On Friday we will be having a Teacher Appreciation Potluck where we are looking for parents to bring in a dish for the teachers to enjoy. This will be at 6:30 pm and there is a sign up on the bulletin board for this as well.

Centerwide PJ Day and Family Movie Night!

Wear your pjs to school on February 22nd! That night, we will be holding a family movie night in the gym. We’ll project a family friendly movie and camp out on the floor with sleeping bags and blankets from home! Parents are welcome to bring lawn chairs if they’d like. Open Arms will provide snacks and refreshments! We hope to see you there!

Children’s Dental Presentations

Children’s Dental will be coming to Open Arms on February 18th to give good oral health presentations to our Preschoolers! We are grateful for this opportunity! They will be bringing toothbrushes and toothpaste for all our children and will give tips and tricks to help your kids remember to brush and floss! The 3s classroom will be presented at 9 am and the 4s and 5s at 9:30.

Christmas Program

Open Arms will be having a Christmas Program on December 14th at 7 pm and it will be held in Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Please have children who are participating in the gym by 6:45. Thank you!

Operation Christmas Child

Open Arms will be participating in Operation Christmas Child again this year. Samaritan’s Purse collects shoe boxes containing items such as toothpaste, pencils, and simple toys to distribute around the world.

“The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to needy children around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.”

We will be collecting items now until November 25th and our kids will pack them up on Nov. 16th!

Parade of Lights

Open Arms will be having their own float in the Parade of Lights this year! We are so excited to participate in this fun downtown event! We will need volunteers to help design and decorate the float when the date gets closer. We will also need lots of kids to ride on the float and wave!
